It is with great pleasure that we take this opportunity to offer you a
warm and sincere welcome to the Korumburra Secondary College Community.
We are proud of our quality educational programs, resources and
facilities which we work hard to provide in a friendly, safe and
supportive environment.
We are also proud of our experienced and dedicated staff, who are
continually upgrading their skills with targeted professional
development. We aim to provide the best possible learning environment
for our students and for all people associated with the college to have
pride in KSC. We offer you an open invitation to contact or visit our
college at any time.
Korumburra Secondary College celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008.
This was not just a celebration of past education, but it was also
recognition of facility upgrades and the wonderful opportunities
available to our students today at KSC. The beautiful new Performing
Arts Centre opened early 2008 added to the positive learning environment
in the rural setting.
With an enrolment of slightly over 500 students, the college remained
committed to providing "Quality Education in a Caring Community".
Surrounded by a picturesque country backdrop and strongly influenced by
the rural culture, the college aims to provide educational opportunities
for our students which enable them to access tertiary education as well
as apprenticeships and careers in local businesses.
As it did 50 years ago, the College has a strong emphasis on developing
personal and social skills through the encouragement of cooperation,
self discipline and caring for others. The college expects that students
will be committed to a high level of achievement, to work to the best of
their ability, be active in and responsible for their learning and show
care and respect for college, teachers, other students and the
environment.
Korumburra Secondary College is co-educational and enrols students from
Years 7-12, aiming to provide a challenging and sequential curriculum
that is responsive to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS)
for Year 7-10 and Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), Vocational
Education and Training (VET) and Victorian Certificate of Applied
Learning (VCAL).
The college offers a variety of educational experiences which include
the South Gippsland School Music Program (SGSMP); athletics, swimming
and cross country events; interschool sport; Outdoor Education courses;
school drama performances: "A Night to Remember" a display of student
performances; community service and many extra-curricular activities at
lunchtimes.
The college has positive relationships with parents which is evident by
the response to Parent Teacher interviews and volunteers at the college.
A Learning Assistance Program (LAP) enabled by parents and community
volunteers, is available to students who may have difficulty settling
into secondary schooling or may have social needs. The Literacy
Intervention Program (LIP) provides intensive instruction for students
identified through assessment to need foundational literacy skills.
A School to Work program in Year 10 provides students with foundation
VCAL curriculum which includes one day per week work placement. A very
experienced and effective team of Education Support Officers provide for
students with funding for integration support. Student welfare is
carefully monitored and addressed proactively by a Welfare Coordinator,
School Nurse, Chaplain and visiting social workers.
The school underwent a positive curriculum audit and school review in
2008 and developed the Strategic Plan for 2009- 2012. The College will
focus on developing student numeracy and literacy skills, as well as
improving VCE/VCAL results, even though they are presently above the
State Average. Other strategic targets are set to improve our student
attendance rates and being environmentally aware of conserving our
resources.
Our staff are continually challenged to improve their teaching skills.
The Performance and Development Plans require staff to respond to
student data to design their curriculum in response to student learning
needs. The College has the support of a Teacher Coach to facilitate
innovative teaching methods in Maths and English.
VCE teachers are required to attend regional programs to be informed of
the latest teaching directives and ideas in their field. A team is
presently designing a new Year 7 curriculum more responsive to the VELS
curriculum specifically in Personal Learning and ICT. Korumburra
Secondary College maintains a proud tradition of excellence in education
in a caring environment. |
